Djamal Benmokhtar (né en 1968, Algérie) est un photographe documentaire franco-algérien, basé à Tenerife, Espagne. En 1973, il fuit l’Algérie avec sa famille pour échapper à la répression politique. À dix ans, son père - qui rêvait de devenir photographe -lui offre son premier appareil photo, déclenchant une passion durable pour la photographie comme outil de mémoire, d’identité et de témoignage.

Dans les années 1990, tout en se formant au métier de pilote au Texas, il commence Chroniques aériennes, un projet au long cours sur les mutations du transport aérien, marquées par l’essor des compagnies low-cost et les bouleversements du 11 septembre. Une sélection decette série est publiée dans la revue française EPIC en 2023, et fait aujourd’hui l’objet d’un projet de livres.

En 1994, il vit plus d’un an au Paraguay, sur les traces de Saint-Exupéry et des routes de l’Aéropostale en Amérique latine. Son engagement humanitaire l’amène à collaborer en 1998 avec Médecins Sans Frontières au Nicaragua, et en 1999 avec Aviation Sans Frontières en Angola. Ces expériences nourrissent une pratique documentaire engagée, centrée sur l’exil, la migration et la dignité humaine.

En 2000, juste après la fin de la guerre civile en Algérie, il part vivre plus de quatre ans dans son pays natal pour renouer avec ses racines. Il y photographie sa famille, son Algérie et des groupes de musique engagée politiquement.

Depuis 2021, il développe Le Voyage, un projet de long cours sur les parcours de migrants africains arrivant aux îles Canaries. En 2024, ce travail est exposé à Gran Canaria en partenariat avec Médecins du Monde. Il a été publié dans El Mundo, El País et distingué par les LensCulture, B/W Photography Awards. Djamal travaille actuellement sur un nouveau projet consacré aux femmes roms de Tenerife, explorant leur histoire, leur culture et leur résilience.

Djamal Benmokhtar (born in 1968, Algeria) is a French-Algerian documentary photographer based in Tenerife, Spain. In 1973, he fled Algeria with his family to escape political repression. At the age of ten, his father—who dreamed of becoming a photographer—gave him his first camera, sparking a lasting passion for photography as a tool for memory, identity, and testimony.

In the 1990s, while training to become a pilot in Texas, he began *Aerial Chronicles* (*Chroniques aériennes*), a long-term project on the transformations in air transport, marked by the rise of low-cost airlines and the upheavals of September 11th. A selection from this series was published in the French magazine EPIC in 2023 and is now the subject of a book project.

In 1994, he lived for over a year in Paraguay, following in the footsteps of Saint-Exupéry and the Aéropostale routes in Latin America. His humanitarian commitment led him to collaborate with Doctors Without Borders (*Médecins Sans Frontières*) in Nicaragua in 1998, and with Aviation Without Borders (*Aviation Sans Frontières*) in Angola in 1999. These experiences fueled a committed documentary practice focused on exile, migration, and human dignity.

In 2000, just after the end of the civil war in Algeria, he moved to his native country for more than four years to reconnect with his roots. There, he photographed his family, his Algeria, and politically engaged music groups.

Since 2021, he has been developing *The Journey* (*Le Voyage*), a long-term project on the journeys of African migrants arriving in the Canary Islands. In 2024, this work was exhibited in Gran Canaria in partnership with Doctors of the World (*Médecins du Monde*). It has been published in *El Mundo* and *El País* and recognized by the LensCulture B/W Photography Awards. Djamal is currently working on a new project dedicated to the Roma women of Tenerife, exploring their history, culture, and resilience.
