Hassan fait partie de la communauté bédouine de Gaza arrivée pendant l'exode palestinien de 1948 aussi connu sous le nom de la Nakba. Son père, originaire d'un village près de la ville de Beersheva (maintenant sous contrôle israélien), s'est installé dans l'enclave en pensant y rester que quelques mois ; il a maintenant plus de 80 ans, cinq femmes et des dizaines d'enfants. Hassan est son cadet de 19 ans et marié depuis l'âge de 17 ans «
je ne voulais pas me marier, mais un jour je me suis réveillé fiancé, c'est mon père qui a voulu me marier ». La tradition et culture bédouine est basée sur une société très patriarcale, l'homme travail généralement dans les champs et pâtures, peut se marier à cinq femmes tandis que la femme bédouine doit rester à la maison et s'occuper du foyer.
A Gaza, la communauté bédouine compte quelques centaines de personnes généralement basées au Sud, à la frontière égyptienne, et au nord, à la frontière avec Israël. Hassan, quant à lui, habite à la frontière d'Erez, seul point de passage humanitaire avec l'Israël. Souvent critiqué pour de possible « collaboration » avec l'armée israélienne, les bédouins sont mis à part de la société gazaouis et généralement considérés comme « non palestiniens » mais « juste » bédouins. «
Je ne sors pas de mon village, ici c'est ma famille, tous les gens que je croise sont mes frères ou mes cousins, lorsque je sors de ma communauté bédouine, je n'arrive parfois même pas à comprendre les gazaouis qui me parlent, nous n'avons pas le même accent » raconte Hassan
. Cloitré au sain de sa communauté, Hassan travaille de l'aube jusqu'au soir. Il alterne entre la garde de ses moutons dans les champs et le travail quotidien de construction autour des étables et habitations. Quand on lui parle de la guerre continuelle avec Israël, Hassan répond qu'il ne veut que la paix et ne cherche pas le conflit comme d'autres jeunes qui s'en vont manifester au checkpoint d'Erez tous les vendredi «
je veux la paix, mais trois de mes frères sont morts tués par des israéliens. Si jamais je vois un soldat israélien en face de moi, je pense que je ne le laisserai pas s"en aller... » Confie Hassan.
