BLOQUÉS EN VOILIER AUX ÎLES SCILLY
Été 2023, avec quatre ami.e.s nous partons du Finistère à bord du voilier Janus en direction des Scilly, un groupe d'îles au sud-ouest de la Cornouailles anglaise. Une avarie moteur à notre arrivée au port de St Mary's nous contraint à rester au mouillage pendant trois semaines dans l'attente de la livraison de pièces détachées. Les jours de beau temps se comptent sur les doigts d'une main pendant notre séjour et les voiliers sont rares dans l'archipel. Alors que notre bateau, dans l'incapacité de bouger, est amarrée à la bouée la plus exposée au vent et à la mer du port, nous devons faire face à deux tempêtes estivales, Patricia et Antoni, qui balayent La Manche à quelques jours d'intervalle. Un peu comme des naufragés, notre quotidien est rythmé par la pêche, les balades, le woofing, et quand le soleil pointe son nez, la visite d?îles voisines. Les pubs de Hugh Town, en particulier "le Mermaid", deviennent aussi des refuges presque journaliers pour sortir de l'espace réduit et constamment agité qu'est Janus dans le mauvais temps. Nous faisons appel à Dan Moulsen, un mécano local, pour nous venir en aide. Malheureusement il ne parvient pas à redémarrer la machine malgré le changement de certaines pièces. Pour continuer la réparation, il faudrait accéder aux cylindres en sortant le moteur du bateau. Une mission impossible sur ces îlots aux infrastructures limitées. Les tempêtes passées non sans quelques frayeurs et dégâts, nous quittons les Scilly à la voile pour rejoindre la Bretagne dans un vent très faible. Une grosse pétole nous scotche au milieu du rail d'Ouessant, mais Éole, dieu du vent est finalement avec nous, à quelques minutes d'annoncer un "PANNE PANNE PANNE" aux cargos qui nous entourent, une petite brise gonfle notre spi et nous pousse jusqu?au port de Loctudy où un remorquage et une sortie de l?eau est prévue.
Ce voyage aux Scilly, aux allures d?une histoire de naufragés, reste pour l?équipage du Janus un excellent souvenir, un moment de partage, de rencontre, de rire et de camaraderie. Les imprévus donnent une saveur particulière aux vacances à la voile qui, bien souvent, en mal pour en bien, transforment quelques jours de congés en des aventures inoubliables.
STRANDED ON A SAILBOAT IN THE SCILLY ISLES
Summer 2023, four friends and I set sail from Finistère aboard the sailboat Janus for the Scilly Isles, a group of islands southwest of English Cornwall. When we arrived in St Mary's harbor, an engine damage forced us to stay at mooring for three weeks, awaiting delivery of spare parts. During our stay, the days of good weather could be counted on the fingers of one hand, and sailing boats were rare in the archipelago. While our boat, unable to move, is moored to the most exposed to the wind and sea buoy in the harbor, we have to face two summer storms, Patricia and Antoni, which blow across the English Channel within a few days of each other. Like shipwrecked sailors, our daily routine is punctuated by fishing, walking, woofing and, when the sun comes out, visiting neighboring islands. Hugh Town's pubs, especially "The Mermaid", also become our almost daily refuges to escape the small and constantly agitated space that is Janus in bad weather. We enlist the help of local mechanic Dan Moulsen. Unfortunately, he was unable to restart the machine despite changing a number of parts. To continue the repair, the cylinders would have to be accessed by taking the engine out of the boat. An impossible mission on these islets with limited infrastructure. The storms passed, with a few scares and damage, we set sail from Scilly to Brittany in very light winds. A sudden lack of wind stuck us in the middle of the Ushant rail, but just a few minutes before announcing a "PANNE PANNE PANNE" to the freighters around us, a light breeze inflated our spinnaker and pushed us to the port of Loctudy, where we were due to be towed out of the water.
This voyage to the Isles of Scilly, with its shipwrecked history resemblance, remains for the Janus crew an excellent memory, a moment of sharing, meeting, laughter and camaraderie. Unforeseen events add a special flavor to sailing vacations, often turning a few days off into unforgettable adventures.
