Normandy Beach Race
Le dernier weekend de septembre a lieu la Normandy Beach Race à Sword Beach, plage historique du débarquement. Dans cette course sur sable de 200 mètres de long, les racers du monde entier viennent s'affronter dans des runs en un contre un avec des véhicules d'avant 1947.
Si on retrouve les premières courses de vitesse au début du XXème siècle, le format « sur plage » est né au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale aux retours des G.I. aux Etats-Unis. Propulsées par la culture custom des hot rods, les « beach races » naquirent avant tout de ces anciens soldats et de leur volonté de se retrouver, à moto ou en voiture, pour s'amuser et soulager les traumatismes de guerre.
« A leur retour, ils ont trouvé dans leur jardin des véhicules des années 30, plus trop au goût du jour, et ont commencé à les bricoler avec un peu près aucune limite. » explique Jean Marc Lazzari, ancien pilote et co-fondateur de l'évènement.
La contrainte du collectionneur d'après-guerre n'existe pas tant les modèles utilisés sont abordables : les surplus militaires sont revendus une bouchée de pain et la production civile reprend son cours. Peu valorisées, les pièces des véhicules Ford ou Harley Davidson sont donc plus simples à échanger et bricoler dans son garage.
Et si l'année 1947 est une référence c'est qu'elle marque une rupture technologique fulgurante avec l'arrivée des moteurs Panhead qui remplacent les Knucklehead chez Harley Davidson puis chez Indian. Cette amélioration des performances, qui induit une survitesse sur le sable, n'est pas privilégiée pour les courses. Il est aussi question de style : on veut que du vintage sur le sable !
Concernant la pollution, l'accent est mis sur la « propreté des véhicules ». Les fuites sont interdites à la sélection et le liquide de refroidissement est remplacé par de l'eau. Les véhicules sont contrôlés avant la course pour vérifier et ajuster tous détails en privilégiant la sécurité du pilote. Une expertise que l'équipe d'organisation tient de ses multiples participations aux courses américaines, notamment The Gentleman Race ou « TROG » pour les initiés.
La NBR est donc l'occasion rêvée de voyager dans le temps en s'offrant un vent d'émotions dans une ambiance rockabilly où les pilotes, en tenue d'époque, créent la parfaite illusion.
Normandy Beach Race
On the last weekend of September, the Normandy Beach Race takes place at Sword Beach, the historic landing beach. In this 200 meter long sand race, racers from all over the world come to compete in one-on-one runs with pre-1947 vehicles.
Although the first speed races were held at the beginning of the 20th century, the "beach" format was born in the aftermath of the Second World War when the G.I.'s returned to the United States. Propelled by the custom hot rod culture, the "beach races" were born above all from these former soldiers and their desire to get together, on motorcycles or in cars, to have fun and relieve the trauma of war.
"When they came back, they found in their garden some vehicles from the 30's, not too much in the taste of the day, and started to tinker with them with almost no limits" explains Jean Marc Lazzari, former pilot and co-founder of the event.
The constraint of the post-war collector does not exist as the models used are affordable: the military surplus is sold for a pittance and civilian production resumes its course. The parts of Ford or Harley Davidson vehicles are not very valuable and are therefore easier to exchange and to tinker with in the garage.
And if 1947 is a reference year, it is because it marks a lightning technological breakthrough with the arrival of the Panhead engines which replace the Knucklehead at Harley Davidson and then at Indian. This improvement of the performances, which induces an overspeed on the sand, is not privileged for the races. It is also a question of style: we want vintage on the sand!
Regarding pollution, the emphasis is on the "cleanliness of vehicles". Leaks are forbidden at the selection and the coolant is replaced by water. The vehicles are checked before the race to verify and adjust any details with the driver's safety in mind. This is an expertise that the organization team has gained from its many participations in American races, notably The Gentleman Race or "TROG" for the initiated.
The NBR is therefore the perfect opportunity to travel back in time by offering a wind of emotions in a rockabilly atmosphere where the drivers, in period clothing, create the perfect illusion.
