John Frum - le dernier culte du cargo au Vanuatu
Le Vanuatu est un Etat d'Océanie indépendant depuis les années 1980. Sur l'île reculée de Tanna, on raconte qu'un mystérieux John Frum est apparu en 1939. Cet homme à la peau claire aurait prédit la guerre du Pacifique et l'arrivée des soldats qui établiront leur base arrière dans l'archipel quelques années plus tard. Le mythe reste bien vivace de nos jours.
Depuis plus de soixante ans, certains organisent leur vie selon les préceptes de ce messager mi-humain mi-dieu. Ils hissent le drapeau américain chaque jour sur la place de leur village. Ils chantent une nuit entière par semaine. Et ils défilent tous les ans en tenues de militaires avec des armes en bois.
Pour les non initiés, ces pratiques suscitent souvent l'amusement. Mais au pied du volcan Yasur, dans le petit village poussiéreux de Lamakara, la bannière étoilée est devenue un très sérieux symbole de résistance culturelle.
Car John Frum n'est pas seulement présenté comme le messager venu annoncer l'arrivée des troupes alliées. Il aurait aussi exhorté la population à renouer avec ses danses et ses traditions. Dans cette ancienne colonie, partagée entre la France et la Grande-Bretagne, l'église et l'administration ont longtemps interdit les pratiques ancestrales. Selon les récits recueillis par les ethnologues Marc Tabani et Jean Guiart, le culte de John Frum aurait été sévèrement réprimé à ses débuts.
Au-delà de l'histoire de John Frum, des mouvements similaires sont apparus à travers le Pacifique Sud après la guerre. Dans les régions isolées, la rencontre brutale avec une autre civilisation, les milliers de soldats Alliés et leurs moyens technologiques, ont bouleversé les représentations du monde. Les populations locales ont parfois adapté leurs croyances après le départ des troupes alliées.
Aujourd'hui ces pratiques «millénaristes» reculent face aux religions classiques.
Ce travail propose un voyage aux confins du monde que l'on connait, à la rencontre de l'un des tout derniers « cultes du Cargo ».
Sur cette petite île du Pacifique, nombreux sont ceux qui parlent aux plantes et qui remercient chaque jour le volcan de leur assurer de bonnes récoltes.

In the tiny Pacific island of Tanna, the american flag became a curious symbol of cultural resistance.
Elders tell that a kind of Messiah named « John Frum » came in the end of the 1940's. He not only announced the Wolrd War Two and the thousands of ally soldiers arriving in this area. He also told islanders to take their traditions up again.
In this country under the control of both France and British administration, the church prohibited ancient rituals and dances. The first John Frum followers were probably jailed for contesting the « Tanna Law » , according to french ethnologist Jean Guiart and Marc Tabany.
More than 60 years later, people still follow the John Frum path. They rise the american flag every day as a symbol of liberty. And every year in the middle of february, they celebrate the John Frum day with dances and a military drill. In the remote pacific village of Lamakara, people are speaking to the growing seeds and they thanks the Yasur Volcano to make them growing.
Above the John Frum tale, a lot of similar movents appeared in the Pacific Islands after the World War Two. The « cargo cults » were the remains of a sudden encounter with the industrial world. And the John Frum movement is actually one of the last of them.
