SUR LES TERRES DE LA JERUSALEM NOIRE
La Jérusalem noire est le nom donné à Lalibela, ancienne capitale septentrionale de l'Abyssinie et ville monastique. Grâce à ses onze églises creusées dans la roche volcanique et datant du XIIe siècle, la ville est vénérée comme un centre d'une importance capitale pour le christianisme copte éthiopien. Chaque croyant est tenu de s'y rendre au moins une fois dans sa vie en pèlerinage. Avant l'arrivée en Afrique des missions chrétiennes européennes, l'Église orthodoxe éthiopienne avait quelques racines dans l'Église copte d'Égypte, montrait des signes d'influence du judaïsme et prétendait être la descendante du roi Salomon. Fidèle à une forte tradition d'oecuménisme, l'Éthiopie abrite également la première mosquée sur le continent africain, la Mosquée Al Nejashi. Principal lieu de pèlerinage chrétien en Afrique et site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, Lalibela est aujourd'hui menacée par les conflits armés et le changement climatique.
IN THE LAND OF BLACK JERUSALEM
Black Jerusalem is the name given to Lalibela, the ancient northern capital of Abyssinia and monastic city. Due to its eleven rock-hewn churches concealed in the volcanic rock dated back from the 12th century, the city is venerated as a center of paramount importance for Ethiopian Coptic Christianity. Every believer is required to make there at least once in his or her life a pilgrimage. Prior to the arrival in Africa of European Christian missions, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church has some roots in the Coptic Church of Egypt, shows evidence of influence of Judaism and claims to be the descendant of the King Solomon. Upholding a strong tradition of ecumenism, Ethiopia is also the home of the first mosque on the African land, the Mosquee Al Nejashi. As a major Christian pilgrimage site in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lalibela is now threatened by armed conflict and climate change.
