ABU DHABI 2018, L'ANNEE DE SHEIKH ZAYED

Chaque année, les Émirats Arabes Unis (EAU) célèbrent une thématique nouvelle en l'honneur de la jeune monarchie unifiée. 2018 était proclamée l'année de Zayed, en référence au 100ème anniversaire de la naissance de Sheikh Zayed ben Sultan, père fondateur des EAU 47 ans plus tôt. Les EAU manquent de main-d'oeuvre et 80% de sa population sont des étrangers, y compris d'Asie centrale et du sud-est. Des portraits géants de Zayed surplombent les vitrines des centres commerciaux où affluent de riches familles musulmanes et les artères traversant la ville. Zayed, la figure tutélaire des EAU se retrouve également à la Grande mosquée : le fondateur de la mosquée Zayed est enterré en ce lieu. Plus grande mosquée du pays, la Mosquée Zayed est peuplée en permanence de dizaines de milliers de pèlerins locaux ou étrangers, des travailleurs saisonniers venus notamment d'Asie ou des touristes du monde entier. A Abu Dhabi la figure de Sheikh Zayed est omniprésente.

Each year, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) celebrates a new thematic in honour of the young unified monarchy. 2018 was proclaimed the Year of Zayed, in reference to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, UAE's founding father 47 years earlier. The UAE is short of labour and 80% of its population are foreigners, including from Central and South East Asia. Giant portraits of Zayed hang in the windows of the shopping malls where wealthy Muslim families flock and on the arteries running through the city. Zayed, the tutelary figure of the UAE, is also to be found at the Grand Mosque: the founder of the Zayed Mosque is buried there. The largest mosque in the country, the Zayed Mosque is permanently populated by tens of thousands of local and foreign pilgrims, seasonal workers from Asia and tourists from around the world. In Abu Dhabi, the figure of Sheikh Zayed is omnipresent.
