Africatown
Leurs ancêtres s'appelaient Charlie Lewis, Oluale Kossola, Pollee Allen, Peter Lee, Orsa Keeby... ils furent les tout derniers captifs africains transportés aux États Unis, en 1860. Plus de cinquante ans après l'adoption de l'interdiction de la traite négrière atlantique en 1807, Timothy Meaher, un trafiquant d'escalves et armateur notoire, avait parié quelques milliers de dollars qu'en moins de deux ans, il pourrait ramener un navire entier d'esclaves, dans la baie de Mobile, sous le nez des US Marshals. En juillet 1860, la goélette Clotilda, originalement destinée au commerce du bois, arrive dans la baie de l'ancienne colonie française sous le commandement du capitaine William Foster avec à son bord 110 Africains, arrachés à leurs racines béninoises.
En 2019, après des années de recherche et grâce à une marée basse historique, l'épave du Clotilda est formellement identifiée au fond d'un bras isolé du fleuve Mobile. Le navire avait été brulé et coulé par son capitaine, William Foster, sous les ordres de Timothy Meaher, afin de détruire les preuves de leur entreprise illégale. Le Clotilda est l'unique épave de la traite négrière atlantique jamais découverte dans les eaux américaines.
Joycelyn Davis a grandi et vécu toute sa vie à Africatown ; elle est la descendante directe de Charlie Lewis qui a survécu au voyage à bord du Clotilda, enduré des années d?esclavage et fondé Africatown. Aujourd'hui, au sein de sa communauté, elle tente de reconstruire un passé défait et de faire vivre un héritage disparate dans un environnement historiquement persécuté par la présence potentiellement mortelle de poisons et de polluants. Comme son ancêtre Charlie avant elle, Joycelyn est une survivante ; atteinte d'un cancer à 39 ans, elle incarne la résilience d'une communauté encerclée par diverses compagnies (papier, pétrole, centrale électrique, malaxage d'asphalte...) dont les profits sont liés aux quantités de suie, dépôts et déchets chimiques en tout genre relâchés dans l'air et déversés dans les sols et les eaux de la baie. Joycelyn se souvient des cendres de l'usine de papier voisine qui couvraient l'étendu du ciel d'Africatown et venaient se poser et percer le linge qui séchait dehors.
Héritage de l'apartheid, le racisme environnemental qui caractérise la communauté d'Africatown démontre l'indissolubilité entre la justice sociale et la justice environnementale. Les communautés marginalisées sont exposées au racisme environnemental et plus vulnérables aux risques sanitaires car elles n'ont pas ou peu de ressources, de représentation politique et de moyens financiers pour s'opposer aux grandes entreprises qui déversent ces déchets dangereux; elles sont souvent tout aussi impuissantes pour se prémunir contre leurs effets nocifs. Les chiffres alarmants de cancers qui ont pris la vie des habitants de cette communauté depuis leur douloureuse implantation, imputables aux pollutions chimiques et troubles écologiques réguliers et normalisés, ne sont plus à démontrer. Néanmoins, dans le sud profond des États-Unis, là où les inégalités semblent progresser plus vite que les droits sociaux, et où l'activité économique prévaut sur tout, le manque d'éducation est flagrant et inquiète Joycelyn. L'arrière, arrière, arrière-petite-fille de Charlie Lewis, qui s'est battu pour sa liberté et une justice pour sa communauté, remarque parallèlement que la plupart des habitants et descendants d'esclaves du quartier ignorent que les rues qu'ils habitent portent toujours les noms des enfants Meaher, héritiers des terres meurtries. Joycelyn ne milite pas pour arracher tous les panneaux de la ville et les marqueurs de propriété de sur lesquels le nom Meaher est gravé mais elle pose la question. Depuis la découverte du Clotilda, tout en défendant son environnement, elle organise des visites All Things Africatown pour proposer une découverte éducative du quartier et de son histoire. Elle participe ainsi à redonner vie aux rêves et aux réalisations passées de ses ancêtres.
Aujourd'hui, les fondateurs d'Africatown sont enterrés dans un cimetière orienté vers l'est, en direction de leur maison africaine dans laquelle ils ne retourneront jamais mais celles qu'ils ont construites au bord du fleuve Mobile demeurent et malgré toutes les agressions sociales et environnementales subies depuis plus de 150 ans, sur les 2000 habitants d'Africatown, une centaine descend des rescapés du Clotilda.

Charlie Lewis, Oluale Kossola, Pollee Allen, Peter Lee, Orsa Keeby... they were the last African captives brought in to the United States, in 1860. More than 50 years after the Act Prohibiting Importation of Salves was passed in 1807, Timothy Meaher, a slave trader, businessman and landowner bet a couple thousands dollars that within two years he could smuggle a ship full of slaves into the mobile bay, under the nose of US Marshals. In July 1860, the Clotilda, initially a lumber ship, arrived in the bay under the command of Captain William Foster with 110 Africans, cut off from their roots.
In 2019, after many years looking for the ship and during a historical tide, the Clotilda shipwreck was found in an isolated arm of the Mobile river. The ship had been burnt and sank by its captain, William Foster, in order to hide the proof of their illegal enterprise. The Clotilda is the only shipwreck of the Atlantic slave trade ever found in American waters.
Joycelyn Davis was born in Africatown and has lived here all of her life; she is the direct descendant of Charlie Lewis who survived the trip on the Clotilda, suffered years of slavery and founded this community. Today, with their help, she tries to restore the past and revitalize her disparate heritage in an environment threatened by potentially lethal poisons and pollutants. Like her ancestor before her, Joycelyn is a survivor. Diagnosed with breast cancer in her late thirties, she embodies the resilience of a community constantly plagued by companies (paper, oil, power plant, asphalt mixing...) whose profits appear to be proportional to the amount of soot, sediments and chemical waste released in the air and poured into the bay's waters and soils. Joycelyn remembers the paper mill ashes filling up the entire sky and raining down on their houses, falling upon their playgrounds and burning holes in their laundry.
An apartheid heritage, the environmental racism that characterizes Africatown demonstrates the indissolubility between social justice and environmental justice. Marginalized communities are exposed to environmental racism and more vulnerable to the sanitary risks because they have little resources, no political representation or financial means to oppose the big corporations that discharge dangerous waste; they are often just as impotent when it comes to protect themselves against their harmful effects. The alarming numbers of cancers that took the lives of this community's inhabitants since their painful settlement, attributable to chemicals and ecological normalized disorders, no longer need to be demonstrated. However, in the deep south of the United States, where inequalities grow faster than social rights and where the economy prevails, the lack of education is evident and worries Joycelyn. The grand grand grand daughter of Charlie Lewis who fought for his freedom and justice for his community, points out that most inhabitants and descendants here, do not even know that the streets they live on are still named after the Meaher sons, heirs of those broken grounds. Joycelyn does not campaign to tear down those signs or the many Meaher property markers that stand all around Africatown but she asks the question. Since the Clotilda discovery, all the while defending her environment, she organizes All Things Africatown tours to offer an educated visit of the neighborhood and its history. She helps breath life back in her ancestors' dreams and passed achievements.
Today, the fouders of Africatown are buried in a cemetery facing east, in the direction of the African home they had to give up on, but the ones they built on the Mobile river shores are still up and despite the social and environmental persecutions sustained for more than 150 years, out of the 2000 inhabitants in Africatown, a hundred are direct descendants from the Clotilda people.
