BIRMANS DE FRANCE - PORTRAITS
En 2019, j'entreprends de partir effectuer un long voyage dédié à la photographie en Asie, un continent que je rêve d'explorer en profondeur depuis des années. En Mars 2020, j'entre en Birmanie avec l'espoir de visiter le pays après la fermeture des frontières en raison de la pandémie, un espoir bien vite éteint puisque je me retrouve interdit de quitter Rangoun (Yangon), la capitale économique. Pendant trois mois j'aurais l'occasion d'arpenter la ville, qui me fait découvrir un peuple profondément paisible et bienveillant, et entrevoir la richesse et la diversité culturelle de ce pays.
Rentré en France, j'effectue une formation en photojournaliste à l?EMI-CFD, en plein milieu de laquelle le Coup d'Etat survient: après presque 10 ans de transition démocratique, les militaires reprennent le pouvoir en Birmanie, et font planer la menace d'un recul des libertés de plusieurs décennies. Bien loin de l'ambiance du confinement que j'y ai vécu et son relatif calme, je découvre alors des images d'une ville remplie de dizaines de milliers de manifestants déterminés à en finir avec un régime d'un autre temps, et bien décidée à ne pas accepter un retour en arrière inconcevable pour une jeune génération connectée, ouverte au monde et n'ayant pas vécu sous le joug militaire le plus stricte.
Se pose alors la question de comment, depuis la France, raconter et participer à ce mouvement de révolte qui secoue le pays?
C'est cette même question qui se posera pour les quelques membres de la très restreinte Communauté Birmane de France. A peine quelques centaines en France -qui partage peu de lien historiques avec ce pays- ils sont étudiant.e.s, époux.ses de Français.es, mais aussi réfugiés politiques immigrés depuis les révoltes de 1988 et jusqu'aux années 2000. Au fil des évènements qui surviennent au Myanmar -nom officiel du pays-, et du nombre de morts qui ne cesse de grimper pour atteindre au moins un millier de victimes, ils se rassemblements à Paris, Lyon, Pau, appellent la communauté internationale à intervenir, et crient haut et fort leur soutien au mouvement de contestation, en s?affichant notamment sur les réseaux sociaux avec le symbole des révoltes asiatiques qu'est devenu le signe des trois doigts.
BURMESE OF FRANCE - PORTRAITS
In 2019, I set out on a long journey dedicated to photography in Asia, a continent I have dreamed of exploring in depth for years. In March 2020, I enter Burma with the hope of visiting the country after the closure of the borders due to the pandemic, a hope quickly extinguished since I find myself forbidden to leave Rangoon (Yangon), the economic capital. For three months I would have the opportunity to wander around the city, discovering a deeply peaceful and friendly people, and getting a glimpse of the richness and cultural diversity of this country.
Back in France, I did a photojournalist training course at the EMI-CFD, in the middle of which the Coup d'Etat occurred: after almost 10 years of democratic transition, the military took over power in Burma, and threatened to roll back freedoms for several decades. Far from the atmosphere of confinement that I experienced there and its relative calm, I discovered images of a city filled with tens of thousands of demonstrators determined to put an end to a regime from another time, and determined not to accept a backward step that is inconceivable for a young generation that is connected, open to the world and has not lived under the strictest military rule.
The question then arises as to how, from France, to tell the story of and participate in this movement of revolt that is shaking the country?
This is the same question that will arise for the few members of the very small Burmese community in France. Barely a few hundred in France - which shares few historical links with this country - they are students, spouses and husbands of French nationals, but also political refugees who immigrated from the revolts of 1988 until the 2000s. As events unfold in Myanmar -the country's official name- and the death toll continues to rise to at least a thousand victims, they gather in Paris, Lyon, Pau, call on the international community to intervene, and shout loudly their support for the protest movement, notably by posting themselves on social networks with the symbol of Asian revolts that has become the three-finger sign.
