Kumartuli, le patrimonie intangible du Bengale
Le pittoresque quartier de plus de 300 ans dans le nord de Calcutta, le long de la riviere Hoogly, entre le Sovabazaar et Bagbazar se transforme en un centre anime juste avant le Durga Puja, qui est la plus grande fete magnum opus de 5 jours des Bengalis dans le monde entier. Kumartuli (Kumar-Potier et Tuli-Reglement), comme son nom l indique, est la localite des potiers, ou la famille des potiers (actuellement environ 150 familles) vit et travaille.
Meme si la fabrication d idoles a generalement ete l oeuvre des hommes, ces dernieres annees, les femmes sont egalement autorisees a construire les idoles. Les potiers utilisent des materiaux respectueux de l environnement et reutilisables pour l idole. Le bambou et la paille sont utilises pour la structure et la stratification se fait avec de l argile. Ce qui est particulierement interessant et intrigant est un rituel habituel de melanger l argile d un bordel avec l argile de la fabrication d idoles. L idole serait incomplete sans utiliser l argile ou le punya maati (terre benie) du bordel ou nishiddopalli (territoire de fordibben). Kumartuli utilise le punya maati de Sonagachi, qui est la plus grande zone de lumiere rouge d Asie.
Les rues etroites et les ateliers encore plus etroits de Kumartuli s animent, quelques mois avant les grands festivals. Les ateliers sont remplis de potiers occupes travaillant 24 heures sur 24 pour finir les idoles, les secher, les peindre, les habiller et pour la touche finale, avant qu ils ne soient envoyes dans differentes parties de l Inde et dans le reste du monde pour le Durga Puja. Le meilleur moment pour visiter Kumartuli est pendant le Mahalaya, generalement environ une semaine avant le debut de Durga Puja lorsque les yeux de la deesse sont attires (dans un rituel de bon augure appele ChokkhuDaan).
Kumartuli, the intangible heritage of Bengal
The quaint, more than 300 year old neighborhood in North Kolkata, along the river Hoogly, between the Sovabazaar and Bagbazar turns into a bustling hub right before the Durga Puja, which is the biggest 5 day magnum opus festivity of the Bengalis all over the world. Kumartuli (Kumar- Potter and Tuli- Settlement), as the name suggests is the potters locality, where the family of potters (currently around 150 families) live and work.
Even though, idol making has usually been the work of the men, in recent years the women are also allowed to build the idols. The potters use eco-friendly and re-usable materials for the idol. Bamboo and straw are used for the structure and the layering is done with clay. What is particularly interesting and intriguing is an usual ritual of mixing the clay from a brothel with the clay of the idol making. The idol is said to be incomplete without using the clay or punya maati (blessed soil) of the brothel or nishiddopalli (fordibben territory). Kumartuli uses the punya maati from Sonagachi, which is the largest red light area in Asia.
Narrow mazed streets and even narrower workshops of Kumartuli gets lively, a couple of months before the big festivals. Workshops are filled with busy potters working round the clock to finish the idols, drying them, painting, dressing them and for final touch, before they are sent off to different parts of India and the rest of the world for the Durga Puja. The best time to visit Kumartuli is during the Mahalaya, usually around a week before Durga Puja starts when the eyes of the Goddess are drawn on (in an auspicious ritual called ChokkhuDaan).
