Mon grand-père, cet électeur FN
Mon grand-père s'appelle Jean-Patrick, mais tout le monde l'appelle Jean-Pat. Il vit dans un village de 100 habitants situé à plus d'une demi-heure de voiture d'Angers. Il y côtoie surtout des personnes âgées et des agriculteurs.
Né au sein d'une fratrie de sept enfants - cinq frères et deux soeurs - il a quitté l'école à l'âge de 16 ans car il était dans l'obligation de travailler pour subvenir aux besoins de sa famille. Il a donc bossé à l'usine et a quitté le domicile familial lorsqu'il a fêté ses 21 ans. Par la suite, il a tenu un restaurant avec ma grand-mère à Verdun, au sein duquel il était cuisinier. Après plusieurs années, ils ont préféré le vendre afin de retrouver le calme de la campagne.
Aujourd'hui, Jean-Patrick a 59 ans. Il travaille dans le transport laitier. La nuit, il parcourt la campagne avec son camion-citerne pour récolter du lait chez les agriculteurs du coin. C'est un homme usé. Il a été opéré du genou il y a peu. Comme il le dit lui-même, il aimerait pouvoir jouir de la vie avant de mourir. Il n'a jamais cherché à « profiter du système » - c'est pour cela qu'il n'a jamais rempli une seule feuille de soins, ou qu'il n'a jamais prétendu au chômage. Se reposer, jardiner, pêcher - il ne demande que cela pour être heureux.
Mon grand-père s'inquiète des multiples réformes des régimes de retraite, qui le laissent dans l'inconnu. "Toutes les semaines, j'entends aux informations que le système de retraite va être modifié, m'a-t-il précisé. Je calcule souvent, et je devrais en avoir encore pour un an avant de pouvoir m'arrêter de travailler - sauf qu'il est difficile d'en être sûr, tellement la situation est changeante."
Il nous arrive de parler de politique, comme tout le monde. Je connais ses opinions. Il vote Front national pour des raisons que certains jugent légitimes, d'autres non. Je peux comprendre qu'il en soit arrivé à cette décision, même si je ne partage pas son avis. Il désire simplement exprimer son ras-le-bol à l'encontre d'une société a? laquelle il a contribué toute sa vie, et qui ne lui apporte plus rien en retour.
Tout cela n'entache pas nos relations pour autant. Quand j'ai réalisé ce reportage, je n'ai pas adopté l'oeil critique du journaliste. J'ai plutôt cherché à capturer des images qui en disaient long sur son quotidien. À chaque fois que je passe le voir, nous passons beaucoup de temps ensemble. Nous partageons une passion commune pour la photographie, passion qui rythme nos sorties.
Mon grand-père est sans doute un peu aigri. Qui ne l'est pas à 59 ans ? Mais c'est une personne que j'adore, et qui m'a avoué n'avoir qu'un seul regret. « J'aurais aimé avoir étudié pendant plus longtemps. Ça m'aurait plu d'être ébéniste, de travailler le bois », m'a-t-il confié un jour.
My grandfather, the far right voter
My Grandfather is called Jean-Patrick but everyone calls him Jean- Pat. He lives in a village of 100 residents nearly half an hour by car from Angers. He mixes mostly with old people and farming folk.
Born in the midst of a family of 7 children, 5 boys and 2 girls, he left school at 16 years old because he was obliged to work to help support his family. Therefore he worked hard slaving away in a factory and left home after he had celebrated his 21st birthday. Following this he ran a restaurant with my Grandmother at Verdun where he was the cook. After many years they decided to sell up and return to the peace and quiet of the countryside.
Today Jean-Patrick is 59 years old. He works in the dairy transport industry. At night he travels all over the countryside in his milk tanker collecting milk from local farmers. He is worn out. Not long ago he had a knee operation. As he himself says he would like to be able to enjoy life before he dies. He has never tried to profit from the system, which is why he has never filled in a medical form for sick pay nor claimed unemployment benefit. To relax, tend his garden, fish, he asks nothing more for his happiness.
My Grandfather worries himself sick about the many reforms to the retirement pension system which leave him bewildered! 'Every week I hear that the pension system is going to be changed,' he explains to me. 'I often calculate that I need to work another year before I can stop working but it is difficult to be sure when the system is really changeable.
We come to speak politics like everyone else. I know his views. He votes National Front for reasons that some judge justifiable others not. I understand how he arrived at this decision although I cannot share his opinions. He simply wants to express that 'enough is enough' and go against a society to which he has contributed all his life and gives him nothing in return.
All this has not soured our relationship. When I produced this report it was not with the critical eye of the journalist. I tried, rather, to capture images that spoke volumes about his daily life. Each time that I come to see him we spend a lot of time together. We share a great interest in photography which enhances the enjoyment of our outings together.
My Grandfather is, without doubt, a little embittered. Who isn't at 59 years old!!! But he is someone I love deeply and who confesses to me that he has only one regret, 'I would have loved to study for a much longer time. It would have given me much pleasure to become a cabinet-maker, he confided to me one day.
