Gambie Le soleil après la pluie
A l'est des côtes Gambiennes à la frontière Sénégalaise, le Skill Center a ouvert ses portes il y a quelques années à un vent nouveau dans le paysage. Tourné vers l'avenir, le collectif Women's Initiative of Gambia a été fondé par Isatou Ceesay dans le village de N'Jau, afin de former des militantes Gambiennes en quête d'émancipation.
Ce centre est spécialisé dans le recyclage des déchets plastiques et la transformation artisanale de ces matériaux, afin de leur donner une seconde vie.
Sur un deuxième lieu proche de Banjul, nous découvrons une usine de confection de briques de cacahuètes ayant pour vocation de remplacer dans les foyers le bois et le charbon traditionnellement utilisés pour la cuisine.
Nous suivons à travers cette série photographique ces femmes à contre-courant de leur société s'inscrivant pour la première fois dans la vie active grâce à des actions de dépollution locale.
Repoussant les murs idéologiques de la culture Gambienne par rapport à la place de la gente féminine, elles ont su imposer leurs idées écologiques à taille humaine, en répondant à trois problèmes urgents: le traitement des déchets du village, la préservation de la nature, et la création de source de revenus pour les femmes.
La genèse de reportage photographique prend place sur deux terrains différents:
La volonté de raconter des histoires singulières à travers des photographies Puis l'envie de les mettre en commun et en mouvement, de construire une histoire autour de l'image pour réussir à retranscrire un univers.
A la racine du sujet: Isatou Ceesay.
Ce projet a débuté il y a quatre ans, à la lecture du livre de Miranda Paul "One plastic bag" qui marque mon premier lien avec l'organisation communautaire "Woman Initiative of Gambia". Cette américaine raconte à travers des illustrations pour enfants l'initiative d'Isatou Ceesay, Malienne Ayant immigré en Gambie, première femme entrepreneur dans le recyclage de plastique à N'Jau, petit village à 6h de route de la capitale.
Isatou et quatre autres femmes ont créé en 1997 le centre de recyclage de N'Jau "The Skill Center". Partant du constat simple que l'utilisation du plastique était abusive et nocive pour l'environnement, celles-ci ont décidé d'assainir les rues mais surtout de donner une nouvelle vie à toutes ces matières avec les moyens du bord. Grâce à des ateliers, elles confectionnent des objets utiles et durables: sacs, bijoux, porte monnaie ect...
Mais l'organisation ne s'arrête pas là, la réussite de ce premier projet les amène progressivement vers un autre d'une plus grande ampleur: la création d'une usine de transformation de coques d'arachides en briquettes de combustibles dans un souci de recyclage des matières premières. En effet, le bois et le charbon sont les combustibles principaux pour la cuisine, afin de limiter la déforestation effrénée du pays, ce procédé de combustibles alternatifs a été pensé pour les remplacer.
Le travail rémunéré des femmes en Gambie est assez rare de manière générale et quasi inexistant dans les milieux ruraux, l'existence de cette organisation de femmes est très remarquée dans le pays. Au fil de mes recherches je constate que le centre de recyclage s'étend également dans les domaines de la savonnerie, du maraîchage, et touche également une partie d'éducation dans les écoles. Les premiers contacts m'ont confortés dans mon envie de documenter et d'approfondir ce sujet.
Avec des centaines de femmes employées à travers le pays, des projets Avec l 'UE et PNUD (Programme des Nations Unies pour le Développement), l'organisation d'Isatou est l'un des espoirs du pays de voir la situation évoluer. Son combat pour l'autonomisation des femmes lui a valu plusieurs récompenses internationales, dont le prix "Difference Maker" de l'Alliance Internationale des femmes à Washington.
Aujourd'hui, elle a lancé un nouveau projet avec des groupes de femmes, dénommé "Reboiser le futur". Elles travaillent à planter des arbres sauvages et fruitiers pour une nouvelle activité écologique et génératrice de revenus.
Enfin, une partie de son intervention est basée sur des campagnes de sensibilisation des villageois autour du problème de l'écologie et de la gestion des déchets.
Gambia The sun after the rain
East of the Gambian coast, on the Senegalese border, the Skill center opened its doors a few years ago to welcome a new wind in the landscape. Looking towards the future, the Women's Initiative of Gambia was founded by Isatou Ceesay in the village of N'Jau, to educate Gambian women activists seeking emancipation.
The center specializes in recycling plastic waste and transforming these materials by hand to give them a second life.
At a second location near in Banjul, we discover a factory that makes peanuts bricks to replace the wood and charcoal traditionally used for cooking.
Throughout this photographic series, we follow these women who are going against the traditional ways of their society and working for the first time by the means of local clean- up projects.
Pushing back the ideological walls of Gambian culture regarding the place of women in the society. They have been able to impose their human scales ecological project's ideas, that bring solutions to three urgent problems: The treatment of village waste, the preservation of nature and the creation of sources of income for women.
This photographic report genesis is based in two areas:
the will to tell singular tales through photographsAs well as the will to put them altogether in motion, in order to be able to recount a story about the image and successfully be able to bring a world to life.
At the root of the subject: Isatou Ceesay.
This project began four years ago, upon reading the book of Miranda Paul, "One plastic bag". This marked my first connexion with the community organization "Women Initiative of Gambia". The book through illustrations for children, tells the story of Isatou Ceesay, a Malian immigrated to Gambia and became the first woman entrepreneur in plastic recycling in N Jau, a small village located at six hours drive from the capital.
In 1997, Isatou and four other women founded the N'Jau recycling center, hereafter, "the Skill Center". Starting from the simple observation that use of plastic was far too excessive and harmful to the environment, they decided to clean-up the streets, but also and above all to give a new life to these materials with the available means.
Through workshop, they create useful and sustainable bags, jewelry, wallets and more.
But the organisation doesn't stop there. Indeed, the success of this first projects is gradually leading them towards another on a much larger scale: the creation of a factory to transform peanut shells into fuel briquettes, still with the objective of recycling raw materials. Wood and charcoal being the main fuels used for cooking, this alternative fuel process was designed to remplace them in order to limit the country's deforestation running rampant.
Paid work for women in Gambia is rare in general and almost non-existent in rural areas. As such, the existence of such women's organisation is clearly getting noticed in the country. As part of my research into this subject, I noticed that the recycling center was also expanding into the fields of soap-making and gardening, and also has some impact in educational parts in schools.
This first contacts only confirmed my wish to document and explore this subject in greater depth.
With hundreds of women employed across the country, projects with the EU and UNDP (United Nations Development Program). Isatou's organization is one of the country's hopes for change. Her fight for women's empowerment has earned her several international awards, including the "Difference Maker" prize from the International Alliance of Women in Washington.
Today, she has launched a new project with her women's groups, called "Reforesting for the future". They are working to plant wild and fruit trees for a new ecological and income-generating activity.
Lastly, part of the project is based on public awareness campaigns among the local population around the issue of ecology and waste management.
