Champs d'arbres
C est pas des forets, c est des champs d arbres. Ecoute, on n entends pas les oiseaux, c est une foret morte, souffle-t-il en regardant autour de lui. Depuis plusieurs annees, Nicolas Henry parcourt pourtant inlassablement ces monocultures d arbres Douglas pour les recenser. Dans ce coin du Morvan, « Grand Nico », comme l appellent ses copains, est bien connu il fait partie de la poignee qui, il y a dix ans, a commence la lutte anti-monocultures dans ce bout de France recouvert de forets.
Car dans cette enclave depeuplee de Bourgogne, les parcelles en monoculture de Douglas se sont multiplient depuis les annees 1960. Et leurs detracteurs accusent elles remplaceraient peu a peu la foret diversifiee.
De fait, a partir des annees 60-70, nombre de proprietaires forestiers ont plante des monocultures de Douglas, en lignes droites, un peu a la maniere d une culture agricole. A 45 ans environ, la parcelle est ?recoltee? avec des machines. Outre l enjeu de produire du bois made in France, la filiere bois representerait entre 5000 et 6000 emplois dans ce coin ou les boulots se font rares. Et elle compte tripler la production de douglas d ici quelques annees au niveau national.
Mais aujourd hui dans le Morvan, la fronde prend de l ampleur. De plus en plus d habitants ne supportent plus les plaies beantes dans le paysage laissees par les "coupes rases". Les opposants a la monoculture d arbres denoncent ?l enresinement? du Morvan et la ?malforestation? de leur territoire . Ils alertent sur une potentielle perte en biodiversite dans ces cultures ou ne pousse qu une seule espece d arbres et sur le chamboulement pour l ecosysteme que representeraient les coupes rases. La colere est telle qu il y a quelques annees, un commando de saboteurs, masques et de nuit, avait meme ete arracher des petits Douglas tout juste plantes sur des parcelles forestieres. Pour Sylvain Angerand, coordinateur de l association ecologiste Canopee ?Ce qui se passe aujourd hui dans le Morvan est une alerte pour l avenir des forets? partout en France.
En face, les exploitants forestiers denoncent des accusations "dogmatiques". Pour nombre d entre eux, ce resineux est tout simplement un ?arbre magique?. De fait, il est economiquement plus interessant que les autres essences il pousse vite et bien (40 a 50 ans contre plus de 100 ans pour un chene), droit, et son bois est de qualite et imputrescible. Sa structure simple rend son exploitation mecanisable. L essence parfaite pour satisfaire une demande en bois made in France grandissante pour fabriquer des batiments ?durables? de plus en plus plebiscites. ?Et puis, c est simple, son exploitation cree des emplois dans ce territoire rural en difficulte?, assene un gros exploitant forestier.
Mais face au rechauffement climatique, les forets melangees, melant differentes essences a differents ages si possible, semblent pour tout le monde etre l ideal. Plus ou moins inatteignable selon les opinions.

"It's not forests, it's fields of trees. Listen, you can't hear the birds, it's a dead forest," he says, looking around him. For several years now, Nicolas Henry has been tirelessly going through these Douglas fir monocultures to take stock of them. In this corner of the Morvan, "Grand Nico", as his friends call him, is well known: he is part of the handful who, ten years ago, started the anti-monoculture struggle in this part of France covered with forests.
Because in this depopulated enclave of Burgundy, the plots of land in monoculture of Douglas have multiplied since the 1960s. And their detractors accuse: they would gradually replace the diversified forest.
In fact, from the 60s and 70s, many forest owners planted Douglas monocultures, in straight lines, a bit like an agricultural crop. At about 45 years old, the plot is "harvested" with machines. In addition to the challenge of producing wood made in France, the wood industry would represent between 5000 and 6000 jobs in this area where jobs are scarce. And it intends to triple the production of Douglas fir within a few years at the national level.
But today in the Morvan, the protest is growing. More and more inhabitants can no longer bear the gaping wounds in the landscape left by the "clear cuts". Opponents of the monoculture of trees denounce the "enresinement" of the Morvan and the "malforestation" of their territory. They warn of a potential loss of biodiversity in these cultures where only one species of tree grows and of the upheaval for the ecosystem that clear-cutting would represent. The anger is such that a few years ago, a commando of saboteurs, masked and at night, had even been uprooting small Douglas firs just planted on forest plots. For Sylvain Angerand, coordinator of the ecologist association Canopée: "What is happening today in the Morvan is a warning for the future of forests" throughout France.
On the other hand, the forestry operators denounce "dogmatic" accusations. For many of them, this softwood is simply a "magic tree". In fact, it is economically more interesting than other species: it grows fast and well (40 to 50 years against more than 100 years for an oak), straight, and its wood is of quality and rot-proof. Its simple structure makes its exploitation mechanizable. The perfect species to satisfy a growing demand for wood made in France to make "sustainable" buildings more and more popular. "And then, it's simple, its exploitation creates jobs in this rural territory in difficulty", asserts a large forestry operator.
But in the face of global warming, mixed forests, mixing different species at different ages if possible, seem to everyone to be the ideal. More or less unattainable according to opinions.
