Pôle Laherrère : quand le quartier Saragosse se transforme
À Pau, le quartier Saragosse a longtemps été perçu comme un îlot d’exclusion sociale. Construit dans les années 1950 pour loger les travailleurs d’après-guerre, il retrouve aujourd’hui une nouvelle vitalité. Parmi les symboles de cette transformation : le Pôle Laherrère, inauguré en décembre 2022, devenu le cœur battant du renouveau urbain.
Conçu par les agences Cobe Architecture (mandataire) et WEEK (cotraitant), le Pôle Laherrère se compose de deux bâtiments aux lignes contemporaines mêlant bois, béton et verre. Il incarne la philosophie du projet : durabilité, mixité et ouverture. Les deux volumes de 5 000 m² chacun accueillent à la fois des logements étudiants, des résidences pour jeunes travailleurs, des bureaux, des espaces de formation ainsi que des commerces et services de proximité.
Autour du Pôle, la place Laherrère, livrée en 2020 sur le site de l’ancien hospice, a redonné vie à l’espace public. Les bancs, les arbres et le marché hebdomadaire qui s’y tient désormais attirent habitants et passants, recréant du lien dans un quartier longtemps fracturé.
Porté par une convention signée avec l’Agence Nationale pour la Rénovation Urbaine (ANRU), le programme « Saragosse, un nouveau souffle » mobilise 127 millions d’euros sur dix ans. Objectif : effacer les stigmates du passé et replacer Saragosse au cœur du dynamisme palois.

Pôle Laherrère: when the Saragosse neighborhood is being transformed
In Pau, the Saragosse district was long seen as an island of social exclusion. Built in the 1950s to house post-war workers, the neighborhood is now experiencing a new wave of vitality. Among the symbols of this transformation is the Laherrère Hub, inaugurated in December 2022, which has become the beating heart of urban renewal.
Designed by architecture firms Cobe Architecture (lead designer) and WEEK (partner), the Laherrère Hub consists of two contemporary buildings combining wood, concrete, and glass—an embodiment of the project’s core philosophy: sustainability, diversity, and openness. Each 5,000 m² building houses student accommodations, residences for young workers, offices, training spaces, as well as local shops and services.
Around the Hub, Laherrère Square—completed in 2020 on the site of the former hospice—has brought new life to the public space. The benches, trees, and weekly market now draw residents and visitors alike, rebuilding social ties in a neighborhood once deeply divided.
Supported by an agreement with the National Urban Renewal Agency (ANRU), the “Saragosse, A New Breath” program mobilizes €127 million over ten years. Its goal: to erase the scars of the past and restore Saragosse to the heart of Pau’s vitality.
