Traversée - Vietnam du nord au sud - 2024
À mon arrivée à Hanoi, la chaleur, l’humidité, les odeurs me rappellent mon passage dans la capitale chinoise il y a quelques années de cela.
Dans la ville, l’air est chaud et lourd. La lumière maussade. Un voile épais crée une frontière entre ma vision et le bleu du ciel. La circulation est surchargée, et l’environnement très pollué, ça en sera de même dans toutes les agglomérations de ma traversée.
Je viens m'immerger dans la culture vietnamienne et désire laisser vagabonder mon regard sur ce pays que je ne connais que très peu. J’irai dès lors des montagnes du nord, au sud du Mékong proche de la frontière cambodgienne. Entre ces espaces, les aléas du voyage, les rencontres dessineront un itinéraire à suivre.
Les corps suintent, la température assomme. La saison des pluies approche à grands pas, l’humidité perle déjà sur nos peaux. Les gens se protègent comme ils le peuvent, afin de ne pas entrer en contact avec les rayons ultraviolets qui traversent l'atmosphère.
Je parcours des kilomètres de routes, me transporte dans de sublimes paysages en quête de rencontres humaines et visuelles. Je m’interroge sur mon approche photographique.
Comment peut-elle être juste et singulière ?
Très rapidement, je comprends que les échanges linguistiques vont être compliqués au vu de ma connaissance inexistante des dialectes et de la difficulté de parler une autre langue étrangère. Je choisis donc de travailler d’une manière différente. Désormais, seuls les regards et sourires feront foi pour échanger et tenter de capter l’atmosphère de ce pays et des êtres qui l'habitent.
J’entre désormais sur les terrains d’une photographie sans parole.
Des villes tourbillonnantes, aux lieux plus reculés, les gens semblent paisibles. Ils cultivent, façonnent, composent avec la nature. Le contraste est saisissant entre l’intensité de la circulation, la charge de tâches à accomplir et le calme intérieur qui illumine les regards.
Peut-être qu’apporter un souffle, une respiration, arrêter le temps pour me rappeler l’essence même de la contemplation, serait la plus juste approche pour cette série.
Les mots pleuvent, mais je ne souhaite pas inonder les lecteurs de ce potentiel surplus verbal et laisse donc les photographies parler à ma place.
Crossing - Vietnam from north to south
When I arrived in Hanoi, the heat, humidity and smells reminded me of my visit to the Chinese capital a few years ago.
The air in the city is hot and heavy. The light is gloomy. A thick veil separates my vision from the blue sky. The traffic is overloaded and the environment highly polluted, as will be the case in all the towns I pass through.
I've come to immerse myself in Vietnamese culture and to let my gaze wander over this country I know so little about. I'll be travelling from the mountains of the north to the south of the Mekong, close to the Cambodian border. Between these spaces, the vagaries of travel and encounters will shape the itinerary to follow.
Bodies ooze, the temperature stuns. The rainy season is fast approaching, and humidity is already beading on our skins. People protect themselves as best they can, to avoid coming into contact with the ultraviolet rays that penetrate the atmosphere.
I travel miles of roads, transporting myself through sublime landscapes in search of human and visual encounters. I wonder about my photographic approach.
How can it be fair and singular?
I quickly realized that linguistic exchanges were going to be complicated by my non-existent knowledge of dialects and the difficulty of speaking another foreign language. I therefore chose to work in a different way. From now on, only looks and smiles will be used to exchange ideas and try to capture the atmosphere of this country and the people who inhabit it. I'm now entering the realm of wordless photography.
From the hustle and bustle of the cities to the remotest corners of the world, people seem at peace. They cultivate, shape and compose with nature. The contrast is striking between the intensity of traffic, the burden of tasks to be accomplished, and the inner calm that lights up the eyes.
Perhaps bringing a breath, a breath, stopping time to remind me of the very essence of contemplation, would be the right approach for this series.
