Je n'ai rien vu à Hiroshima
Je ne devais pas aller à Hiroshima. En tout cas, pas cette année a priori. En théorie, j'aurais dû être quelque part en Indonésie. J'ai changé d'avis, un peu à la dernière minute, quand bien même l'envie, voire le besoin, d'aller à Hiroshima remonte à des années. Je ne saurais dire quand exactement car je suis malheureusement une piètre archéologue de ma propre mémoire.
Le lycée et ses figures imposées - seconde guerre mondiale, histoire du Japon... -, l'université et ses apprentissages choisis - physique atomique, astrophysique, épistémologie... - auxquels se superposent une incompréhension répétée face aux atrocités contemporaines qui jalonnent l'Histoire, une compréhension redoutable de l'illusion pacifique, mais aussi une indéniable fascination pour l'iconographie apocalyptique avec cette pensée dérangeante voire obscène « c'est beau, quand même, un nuage atomique ! ». Il y a aussi cette incrédulité face aux images de cette ville instantanément rasée, de sa population décimée en une nictation, face aussi à cette violence inouïe, inimaginable, dictée et mise en oeuvre par des Hommes contre d'autres Hommes. On dit même que le monde moderne est né avec cette guerre...
Il y a 13 ans, je creuse le sillon et me plonge dans les images des films « atomiques », rédige un court essai sur la place des images d'archives dans celui d'Alain Resnais au scénario de Marguerite Duras, Hiroshima mon amour, réalisé en 1959, et dans son remake de 2001, qui n'en est pas réellement un, H Story, de Nobuhiro Suwa, réalisateur japonais né à Hiroshima en 1960. Dès lors, je ne conçois pas ne pas y aller moi-même un jour. C'est toujours un faisceau d'éléments conscients et inconscients qui me conduit quelque part.
Même s'il a fallu des décennies, Hiroshima a été totalement reconstruite, les vestiges de l'époque sont rares et sanctuarisés. Je me demande si une ville ayant vécu cette histoire-là laisse filtrer une atmosphère particulière même 72 ans après. Cette histoire quasi unique - je pense à Nagasaki que l'on a tendance à oublier - dans celle de l'Humanité. Je me demande ce que l'on peut ressentir, en tant qu'étranger et jeune épargnée par ces horreurs, en errant dans ses rues, en visitant ses musées, en croisant ses habitants. Ce n'est pas un utile « vous êtes ici » sur un plan de papier vers lequel on tend, mais un distancié « cela s'est passé ici » sur une plaque de métal. Et, simultanément, je me dis que Hiroshima est désormais une ville comme une autre, que l'on ne peut décemment pas vivre ad vitam aeternam avec le poids de l'Histoire sur ses épaules, a fortiori, celle que l'on n'a pas vécue. Donc, Hiroshima, c'est tout à la fois, le souvenir, l'oubli, le temps, l'inconscient collectif, la fascination de la toute puissance, c'est l'Histoire, c'est l'extra-ordinaire, c'est l'inhumain, c'est l'aveuglement, c'est l'impossibilité de la représentation, c'est la folie humaine, la résilience, le recueillement, la réconciliation mais c'est aussi l'ordinaire, le lieu commun, le banal, le trivial, le normal, le quotidien, les petits riens...
I saw nothing in Hiroshima
I wasn't supposed to go to Hiroshima. At least not this year a priori. In theory, I should have been somewhere in Indonesia. I changed my mind a little at the last minute, even though the desire - even the need - to go to Hiroshima goes back years. I cannot say exactly when because I am unfortunately a poor archaeologist of my own memory.
The high school and its imposed figures - the Second World War, the history of Japan... -, the university and its chosen apprenticeships - atomic physics, astrophysics, epistemology... - to which are superimposed a repeated incomprehension in front of the contemporary atrocities which mark out History, a redoubtable understanding of peaceful illusion, but also an undeniable fascination for apocalyptic iconography with this disturbing even obscene thought "nevertheless it's beautiful, an atomic cloud! ». There is also this disbelief in front of the images of this instantly shaven city, of its population decimated into a nictation, also in front of this incredible violence, unimaginable, dictated and implemented by Men against other Men. It is said that the modern world was born with this war...
Thirteen years ago, I dig the furrow and immerse myself in the images of "atomic" films, write a short essay on the place of archive images in that of Alain Resnais in the script by Marguerite Duras, Hiroshima mon amour, directed in 1959, and in its remake of 2001, which is not really one, H Story, by Nobuhiro Suwa, a Japanese director born in Hiroshima in 1960. Even if it took decades, Hiroshima was completely rebuilt, the remains of the time are rare and sanctuarized. I wonder if a city that has experienced this history lets a particular atmosphere filter through even 72 years later. This almost unique story - I think of Nagasaki that we tend to forget - in that of Humanity. I wonder what it feels like, as a foreigner and as a young person spared by these horrors, wandering in its streets, visiting its museums, meeting its inhabitants. It is not a useful "you are here" on a paper map to which one tends, but a detached "it happened here" on a metal plate. And, at the same time, I tell myself that Hiroshima is now a city like any other, that one cannot decently live forever with the weight of history on one's shoulders, a fortiori, the one that one has not lived. So Hiroshima is all at once memory, oblivion, time, the collective unconscious, the fascination of omnipotence, it is history, it is the extraordinary, it is inhuman, it is blindness, it is the impossibility of representation, it is human madness, resilience, recollection, reconciliation but it is also the ordinary, the commonplace, the banal, the trivial, the normal, the everyday, the little things...
