Résidents, très court terme
Squat Bourgogne, et ensuite Squat Sarlat, nommés d'après leurs rues, ont hébergé près de 200 personnes sans papiers au cours de deux années, dont 35 familles, la plupart des demandeur.es d'asile en attente de leurs papiers venant de l'Europe de l'Est.
Dans les appartements la plupart des affaires étaient déjà emballées dans des sacs en plastique. "Parfois quand ils évacuent, il n'y a pas forcément le temps de prendre toutes nos affaires, au moins comme ça on est sûr de les prendre avec nous au plus vite." L'électricité n'était pas un souci, mais l'accès à l'eau et au chauffage était plus difficile. "21ième siècle, et en France, on n'a pas d'eau !" disait une habitante. Les habitant.es avaient encore l'espoir de pouvoir trouver un autre squat en cas d'expulsion : "vers Neuhof il y a beaucoup de bâtiments vide, on peut aller là-bas si jamais" disait une des habitantes. L'expulsion étant imminente, les habitant.es se demandaient si ça ne serait pas mieux de déménager avant l'évacuation pour éviter aux enfants le stress d'être réveillé par l'arrivée des camions de police.
Après plus d'une année, le Squat Bourgogne a été évacué le 24 mai, à 6h du matin. La plupart des habitant.es sont parti.es occuper un autre bâtiment, rue de Sarlat cette fois-ci. Entre temps, une nouvelle loi, autorisant l'expulsion des squats durant la trève hivernale : la loi du 27 juillet 2023. L'évacuation du Squat Sarlat a eu lieu en novembre, à 6h du matin. La plupart des habitant.es avaient déjà trouvé d'autres solutions, bien qu'éphémère. Deux hommes sont venus pendant l'expulsion : ils demandaient à entrer pour récupérer leurs médicaments qu'ils avaient oubliés à l'intérieur. La police ne les a pas laissés entrer.
Les deux hommes sont partis, les habitant.es aussi. Certain.es enfants devront changer d'école, chose que les familles essayaient d'éviter à tout prix. Iels sont maintenant obligé.es de trouver des solutions individuelles, vraisemblablement éphémères jusqu'à l'acquisition de leurs papiers.
Very Short Term Residents
The Bourgogne squat, and later the Sarlat squat, named after their streets, housed nearly 200 undocumented people over the course of two years, including 35 families, most of whom were asylum seekers from Easter Europe, waiting for their papers.
In the apartments, most of the belongings were already packed in plastic bags. "Sometimes when they evacuate, there isn't necessarily time to take all our things, at least this way we are sure to take them with us as quickly as possible." Electricity was not a concern, but access to water and heating was more difficult. "In the 21st century, and in France, we don't have water!" said one resident.
The residents still had hope of finding another squat in case of eviction: "There are a lot of empty buildings towards Neuhof, we can go there if necessary," said one of the residents. With eviction imminent, the residents wondered if it wouldn't be better to move before the evacuation to spare the children the stress of being awakened by the arrival of police trucks.
After more than a year, the Bourgogne squat was evacuated on May 24th at 6 am. Most of the residents went to occupy another building, this time on Sarlat Street.
In the meantime, a new law allowing the eviction of squats during the winter truce was passed: the law of July 27, 2023. The evacuation of the Sarlat squat took place in November at 6 am. Most of the residents had already found other solutions, albeit temporary. Two men came during the eviction: they asked to enter to retrieve their medications that they had forgotten inside. The police did not let them enter.
The two men left, the residents too. Many children will have to transfer to another school, a fate that the families tried to avoid at all costs. They are now obliged to find individual solutions, presumably temporary until they are given their papers.
