PUTIN'S LANDS - UKRAINE
C’est au réveil que soudain le titre du film d’Alexeï Guerman, 20 jours sans guerre, est venu flotter entre ma somnolence et ma tasse à café.
Alors oui, mais comment ? La guerre en Ukraine n’est pas une fiction et je n’aurai pas de héros à suivre dans ses périples. Le monde que j’allais rencontrer sera la plupart du temps, hostile et suspicieux. Malgré cela, j’ai décidé de tenter ce périple. En partant du Donbass, rejoindre la Crimée. Puis pousser plus loin, vers ces territoires dont les populations qui, parce qu’ethniquement méprisées et / ou parce qu’elles sont dirigées par des autocrates mafieux, paient un lourd tribut à la guerre de Poutine. La traversée allait donc me conduire jusqu’en Tchétchénie et au Daghestan.
Durant cette longue incursion sur ces terres poutiniennes, le long des routes faites d’impossibilités, de détours, d’attente, de frustrations à ne pouvoir déclencher l’appareil photo, et d’un nombre infini d’arrestations de toutes sortes, j’ai rencontré un monde principalement composé par une amnésie presque schizophrénique. Mais aussi une population façonnée par la peur, une peur profonde qui prend racine à l’époque des grandes purges. Dans un tel Etat, ou étau, comment ne pas être motivé par la nécessité de la seule réussite et de ses avantages afin de se convaincre que le monde selon Poutine est bien le meilleur ? Comment ne pas passer sous silence les assassinats d’opposants et de journalistes ? Comment ne pas croire que les Ukrainiens sont bien des nazis puisque cette dite « opération spéciale » n’est finalement que la suite glorieuse de la « Grande Guerre Patriotique » ?
Lors d’un des innombrables interrogatoires que j’ai dû subir, la femme en charge de la besogne me demande : « Savez-vous quel jour nous sommes ? » Je lui réponds par l’affirmative en ajoutant que je ne comprends pas le sens de sa question. D’un air fier et douloureux, elle me répond : Aujourd’hui, nous sommes le 22 juin, c’est le triste anniversaire de l’entrée du peuple soviétique dans la grande guerre patriotique ». « Je suis désolée », dis-je,« Je ne me souvenais pas de cette date… Mais il faut dire que l’occident se battait depuis déjà presque 2 ans pendant que Hitler et Staline étaient occupés à faire copain-copain et à se partager l’Europe ». A ce moment, j’ai pu voir le socle de la propagande vaciller mais cela n’a duré qu’un bref instant.
Les rares paroles critiques que j’ai pu entendre ont été dites à la condition de n’en rien révéler. Oui, il y a quelques personnes qui voient et qui entendent autre chose que la propagande du Kremlin, même si la plupart vivent comme si cette guerre n’existe pas.

It was when I woke up that the title of Alexei Guerman's film, 20 Days Without War, floated between my drowsiness and my coffee cup.
So yes, but how? The war in Ukraine is not fiction, and I'm not going to have a hero to follow on his journeys. The world I would encounter would be, for the most part, hostile and suspicious. Despite this, I decided to attempt the journey. Starting in the Donbas, I would reach the Crimea. Then to push on towards those territories whose populations, because they are ethnically despised and/or ruled by mafia-like autocrats, are paying a heavy price for Putin's war. The journey took me as far as Chechnya and Dagestan.
During this long incursion into Putin's land, along roads full of impossibilities, detours, waiting, frustrations at not being allowed to set off the camera, and an infinite number of arrests of all kinds, I encountered a world mainly composed of an amnesia almost schizophrenic. But also, a population shaped by fear, a deep-seated fear rooted in the days of the Great Purges. In such a State, or vice, how can one not be motivated by the need for success and its advantages, in order to convince oneself that the world according to Putin is indeed the best? How can one not ignore the assassinations of opponents and journalists? How can one not believe that the Ukrainians are indeed Nazis, since this so-called “special operation” is nothing more than the glorious continuation of the “Great Patriotic War”? During one of the countless questionings, I had to undergo, the woman in charge of the task asked me: “Do you know what day it is?” I answered in the affirmative, adding that I didn't understand the meaning of her question. With a proud and pained expression, she replies: “Today is June 22, the sad anniversary of the Soviet people's entry into the Great Patriotic War”. “I'm sorry”, I said, 'I didn't remember that date... But it must be said that the West had already been fighting for almost 2 years, while Hitler and Stalin were busy making buddy-buddy and splitting Europe between them”. At that moment, I could see the propaganda pedestal wobbling, but only for a brief moment.
The few critical words I heard were said on condition that nothing was revealed. Yes, there are a few people who see and hear something other than Kremlin propaganda, even if most live as if this war doesn't exist.
