BRÉSIL - VIVRE EN AMAZONIE
Mon premier contact avec l'Amazonie c'était par quelques photos publiées aux magazines brésiliennes Manchete et Realidade. À chaque reportage on découvrait une nouvelle facette sur cette région lointaine, très peu connu au Brésil, mais aussi dans le monde des années 70.
L'Amazonie faisait partie de l'image d'un Brésil géant, fertile et prometteur qui la dictature militaire voulait construire. Avec la conquête du troisième titre de champion au monde de football et la découverte du pétrole et d'autres richesses minières, un nationalisme était en pleine propagation. Dans la région amazonienne une série de grands projets ont vu le jour, une manière désordonnée de coloniser les frontières isolées et lointaines de la grande forêt, connu comme l'enfer vert. Pendant cette période, des milliers de familles ont été encouragées à quitter leurs terres dans le sud du pays pour s'installer dans la forêt du nord du pays. La région, connu à l'époque comme le poumon de la planète, était aussi inconnu de la grande majorité de ces nouveaux colons qui s'installaient dans les terres promises pour l'intégration du pays. Mais les promesses se sont vite transformées en désillusions. Les nouveaux colons se sont confrontés à la présence des Indiens et aussi à des anciens riverains ou des exploitants de caoutchouc, colons d'une autre époque. L'Amazonie, espace d'équilibre par sa propre nature, commence alors à subir les premières grandes menaces de destruction majeures de son environnement.
Dans son histoire, toute l'affluence humaine vers la région amazonienne a eu une liaison à la demande internationale du marché de commodities. D'abord le bois, puis l'or, le latex, le fer et d'autres minéraux. Aujourd'hui c'est le moment de la viande et le soja. Mon travail de documentation photographique dans la région remonte au début des années 90, lorsque j'étais photographe pour le magazine Manchete. Depuis que je suis parti du Brésil en 1997, j'y suis retourné plusieurs fois dans mon pays. Et parmi ces nombreux voyages beaucoup d'entre elles ont été consacrées à des reportages en Amazonie.
Ces portraits en noir et blanc ont été réalisées avec des colons qui habitent cette région. Ils
utilisent la richesse de la forêt comme leurs moyens de subsistance, en contribuant de cette façon à un développement durable de l'Amazonie.
BRAZIL: LIVING IN THE AMAZON
My first contact with the Amazon was through some photos published in the Brazilian magazines Manchete and Realidade. Each reportage revealed a new facet of this remote region, little known in Brazil but also in the world of the 70s.
The Amazon was included to create the image of a giant, fertile and promising Brazil that the military dictatorship wanted to build. With the third world championship in soccer and the discovery of oil and other mineral wealth, a nationalism was propagating. In the Amazon region a series of large projects were born, a haphazard way to colonize the remote and isolated borders of the rainforest, known as the green hell. During this period, thousands of families were encouraged to leave their lands in the south of the country to settle in the northern forest of the country. The region, known at the time as the lungs of the planet, was also unknown to the vast majority of these new settlers who were moving into the land promised for the integration of the country. But the promises soon turned to disillusions. The new settlers were confronted with the presence of the Indians and also with the former river dwellers or rubber farmers, settlers from another period. The Amazon, a space of equilibrium by its own nature, soon began to suffer the first major threats of destruction of its environment.
In its history, all the human affluence to the Amazon region has been linked to the international demand of the commodities market. First wood, then gold, latex, iron and other minerals. Today it's time for meat and soy.
My photographic documentation work in the Amazon goes back to the early 90's, when I was a photographer for Manchete magazine. I left Brazil in 1997 but I have returned several times to my country. And among those trips many of them have been dedicated to photograph the Amazon.
These black and white portraits were made with settlers who live in this region. They
dedicate themselves to use the richness of the forest as a fruit of subsistence, contributing in this way to a sustainable development of the Amazon.
