Après la mer
Au cours de l'été 2015, j'eus l'occasion d'habiter une petite maison, quelques jours sur l'île d'Ouessant. Il y avait là un piano dont les touches peinaient à remonter tant les mortaises devaient être gonflées d'embruns, le vent qui s'appuyait contre la porte me rappelait à chaque instant où je me trouvais. Il y avait un piano et des livres aussi. Beaucoup de livres. Nombreux étaient ceux qui racontaient l'île, son histoire particulière, ses spécificités si bien que j'éprouvai la sensation d'habiter un bout du monde, ou plutôt un endroit au-delà du monde, une île fantasmée, un rocher sans arbre battu par les flots où ne subsistaient plus que la mer et le vent. Parmi ces livres, "La Mer" de Bernhard Kellermann. Son auteur y conte un séjour de quelques mois à Ouessant dans les années 1910, son verbe magnifique me fit pénétrer l'île avec délice. Lire les pages de "La Mer" lorsque la nuit est tombée et que gronde cette même mer à quelques encablures, vous réserve des plaisirs difficiles à reproduire par la suite.
Dans les premières pages, Kellermann écrit ceci :
"Le chemin passait tout en haut des rochers dans lesquels la mer pompait et raclait sans arrêt.
Jour et nuit elle était au travail. Elle trouvait une fissure et commençait à percer un tunnel. Il fallait qu'il soit fini dans mille ans, et elle se mettait courageusement à l'oeuvre. Quelques pas plus loin elle martelait dans une grotte et burinait dans une faille. Dans mille ans la faille devait rejoindre le tunnel. Alors, pendant les grandes tempêtes, elle lancerait en l'air des pics et des pointerolles pour creuser une galerie.
Et mille autres années plus tard le plafond était si mince qu'il s'écroulerait sous les averses, et un rocher se dressait, dégagé et tranchant comme une faux. Et la mer se cherchait une nouvelle tâche. Elle avait le temps."
Mon temps quant à moi était compté mais à dire vrai, je n'oublierai jamais ces quelques jours.
Beyond the sea
During the summer of 2015, I had the opportunity to live in a small house, a few days on the island of Ouessant. Reading the pages of "La Mer" when night has fallen and the same sea rumbling a few cables away, you have pleasures that are difficult to reproduce afterwards. In the first few pages, Kellermann writes this: "The path passed at the top of the rocks in which the sea pumped and scraped without stopping. Day and night she was at work. She found a crack and began to tunnel. It had to be over in a thousand years, and she bravely set to work. A few steps further she was pounding in a cave and chiseling in a fault. In a thousand years the fault was to join the tunnel. So, during great storms, she would throw spikes and spikes into the air to dig a gallery. And a thousand more years later the ceiling was so thin it would crumble in the downpours, and a boulder stood up, loose and sharp like a scythe. And the sea was looking for a new task. She had time. " My time was limited, but to tell the truth, I will never forget those few days.
