Tropiques
C'est un vieil homme dont je lave le corps chaque matin.
Une chambre sans caractère, le silence, une île.
J'ignore s'il parle ma langue, monsieur Yu est né en Chine. Il me sourit bien de temps en temps et semble comprendre mes ordres simples.
Sa femme se tient en retrait un instant, nous discutons un peu avant qu'elle décide de nous laisser seuls. Malgré son grand âge, monsieur Yu a le corps d'un jeune homme, sa peau ne se craquèle ni ne flétrie à nul endroit et la chair tendue a l'apparence de n'avoir pas vécue. Mais l'illusion s'arrête là, car monsieur Yu est las d'avoir déjà trop éprouvé.
Las sont ses reins, las aussi sont ses poumons.
Ces jours derniers sa respiration est devenue courte, comme assaillie, impatiente d'arracher le peu de souffle qu'elle préserve encore. Le vieil homme a les yeux fermés tandis que je passe un gant d'eau chaude sur son visage.
Nous partageons ce silence, peut-être pourrai-je lui poser des questions mais je n'en fais rien. Depuis des mois déjà. J'ai parfois la sensation que nous partageons ce silence, comme si nous l'avions choisi sans le dire, mais je sais que là n'est pas la vérité.
La vérité est que monsieur Yu a choisi ce silence, je ne fais qu'obéir à la circonstance.
Mes mains parcourent son corps tandis que mon esprit vagabonde. Le torse mince, une fistule frémissante au bras gauche, une jambe amputée au genou que j'ai vu pas à pas se recroqueviller, comme on ronge un ongle à la pulpe. Je connais tous ses gestes, chaque recoin de peau, tressaillement de muscles, pointillisme méthodique d'une toilette quotidienne réalisée au lit.
Je convoite au long du corps l'existence de monsieur Yu, tel le paysage du volcan exprimant nettement par l'érosion, les soubresauts de la terre, les années, les semaines déroulées. Je songe au long voyage, les mois dans la moiteur du bateau, l'Océan Indien de part en part. Je pense à l'enfant assis sur le pont, un trait sur une carte maritime entre Canton et cette île, années 30, bout du monde.
J'ai la sensation que ma photographie prend naissance dans cette chambre sans caractère, dans ce silence. Une manière de conte, de ces histoires racontées aux enfants, la mémoire des hommes, l'eau qui ruisselle de la montagne.
Je crois que monsieur Yu va bientôt mourir.
Mes filles crapahutent vaillamment dans les ravines, nous transpirons goutte à goutte. Nous nous enfonçons dans l'île et le corps de monsieur Yu est immobile. L'eau ruisselle de la montagne, le vent se lève à l'horizon, la tempête nous arrive du large.
Tropics
He is an old man whose body I wash every morning.
A room without soul, silence, an island.
I do not know if he speaks my language, Mr. Yu was born in China. He smiles at me from time to time and seems to understand my simple orders.
His wife stands back for a moment, we argue a little before she leaves us alone. Despite his great age, Mr. Yu has the body of a young man, his skin does not crack or wither in any place and the flesh tense has the appearance of not having lived. But the illusion stops there, because Mr. Yu is tired of having already felt too much.
Las are his loins, so are his lungs too.
These last days, breathing has become short, as if assailed, eager to snatch the breath still preserved. The old man's eyes are closed as I pass a glove of warm water over his face.
We share this silence, maybe I can ask him questions but I do not do anything about it. For months already. I sometimes feel that we share this silence, as if we had chosen without saying it, but I know that is not the truth.
The truth is that Mr Yu chose this silence, I'm just obeying the circumstances.
My hands run through his body while my mind wanders. The thin torso, a quivering fistula in the left arm, a leg amputated at the knee that I saw step by step curling up, as one nibbles a nail at the pulp. I know all his gestures, every corner of skin, thrill of muscles, pointillism of a daily toilet performed in bed.
I imagine Mr. Yu's existence all along the body, like the landscape of the volcano expressing through erosion, the jolts of the earth, the years, the weeks unfurled. I think of the long journey, the months in the wet of the boat, the Indian Ocean from side to side. I think of the child sitting on the bridge, a line on a maritime map between Canton and this island, 1930s, end of the world.
I feel that my photography is born in this room without soul, in this silence. A way of telling, of these stories told to children, the memory of human, the water flowing from the mountain.
I think Mr. Yu is going to die soon.
My daughters trudge valiantly into the gullies, we perspire drop by drop and sink into the island while the body of Mr. Yu remains motionless. The water is flowing from the mountain, the wind is rising from horizon, the storm is coming from the sea.
