Les irréductibles de Fort-Mardyck
Dans l'agglomération de Dunkerque, la ville de Fort-Mardyck, c'est un petit bout de cette France pavillonnaire plus ou moins périphérique qui polarise l'attention depuis le début du mouvement des Gilets jaunes. "Un vrai village gaulois", plaisantent certains de ses habitants, dont le coeur oscille entre esprit de solidarité et tentation du repli.
Mais Fort-Mardyck, c'est aussi l'histoire d'un ancien village de pêcheurs, coupé de son accès à la mer au début des années 1960 par la construction du complexe sidérurgique d'Usinor (aujourd'hui ArcelorMittal). C'est l'histoire d'une ville convertie à la cadence des chaînes de production en seulement une génération, embringuée vaille que vaille dans les turbulences de l'épopée industrielle. C'est l'histoire d'une ville qui a toujours vécu à l'écart des vagues migratoires successives, loin des grands ensembles de Dunkerque, de Grande-Synthe ou de Saint-Pol-sur-Mer. C'est l'histoire d'une ville de 3 533 habitants, socialiste de longue date, qui compte plus d'une trentaine d'associations à vocation sociale, culturelle ou sportive, et où le carnaval réchauffe le coeur pendant les trois mois hivernaux. Mais c'est également l'histoire d'une ville où la candidate Marine Le Pen a atteint le taux record de 69% des suffrages au second tour de l'élection présidentielle de 2017.
En février 2019, je suis parti durant une semaine à la rencontre de ses habitants pour comprendre leur quotidien et leurs aspirations. Profondément ancrée dans le micro-local, la vie des Fort- Mardyckois se construit souvent à l'écart d'un monde sur lequel ils considèrent ne pas avoir prise.
The Diehards of Fort-Mardyck
In the agglomeration of Dunkirk, the town of Fort-Mardyck belongs to this more or less peripheral suburban France that has been polarizing attention since the beginning of the Yellow Jackets movement. "A real Gallic village," jokes some of its inhabitants, whose hearts oscillate between solidarity and inward-looking attitudes.
But Fort-Mardyck tells also the story of a former fishing village, cut off from its access to the sea in the early 1960s by the construction of the Usinor (now ArcelorMittal) steel complex. It is the story of a town converted to the pace of production lines in just one generation, embroiled in the turbulence of industrial activities. It is the story of a town that has always remained aloof from the successive waves of migration, unlike the surrounding cities of Dunkirk, Grande-Synthe or Saint-Pol-sur-Mer. It is the story of a town of 3,533 inhabitants, a longstanding socialist town with more than thirty associations with a social, cultural or sporting vocation, and where the carnival soothes the souls during the three winter months. But it is also the story of a city where the candidate Marine Le Pen reached the record rate of 69% of the votes in the second round of the 2017 presidential election.
In February 2019, I went for a week to meet its inhabitants to understand their daily life and their aspirations. Deeply rooted in the micro-local, the life of the Fort-Mardyckois is often built away from a world they consider they have no control over.
