Aux Philippines, le combat de coqs est un sport populaire existant depuis des siècles.
Communément appelé Sabong en langue Tagalog, il est un des passe-temps les plus appréciés des philippins : 7 à 13 millions de combats rassemblent chaque année un public quasi exclusivement masculin. Légalisée par le président Marcos en 1974, cette pratique, considérée comme partie intégrante des traditions culturelles de l'archipel, a survécu à l'heure où de nombreux pays l'ont progressivement interdite.
L'arène de Villa Gonzalo au coeur d'un quartier populaire de la ville de Cébu est une des plus fréquentée de la région des Visayas centrales. Chaque dimanche sont organisés des Sabong où plusieurs dizaines voire plusieurs centaines d'hommes s'installent autour de l'arène. Certains viennent pour parier tandis que d'autres portent avec fierté leur coq au creux du bras et souhaitent le faire combattre.
Chaque combat voit s'affronter deux coqs faisant l'objet de paris endiablés, un favori le llamado et son adversaire le dejado. C'est alors qu'un personnage-clé intervient, le kristo ou preneur de paris. Incapables de se faire entendre dans la rumeur impatiente de la foule, les parieurs communiquent avec le kristo par des signes codifiés de la main permettant de lui faire comprendre quelle somme d'argent ils souhaitent parier.
Une fois les paris équilibrés, le casador - meneur de jeu - met fin au vacarme en annonçant le début du combat. Pendant que chacun des coqs est équipé d'une longue lame recourbée et tranchante fixée à sa patte gauche, l'attention du public se porte vers le centre de l'arène. Tenus à bout de bras par leurs propriétaires, les deux coqs sont mis en présence bec contre bec.

In the Philippines, cockfighting is a very popular sport that has been around for many centuries.
"Sabong", as it is locally known in the Philippines, is one of the Filipinos' favorite pastimes. Every year, between 7 and 13 million fights are organized. The spectators are overwhelmingly male. It has been passed as a legal sport by President Marcos in 1974. This practice is considered as an important part of the cultural tradition of the country. It has lasted throughout the years, in spite of the fact that many countries have made it illegal.
The Villa Gonzalo arena, at the heart of a popular neighborhood in Cebu City, is one of the most well-known arenas in the Central Visayas region. Every Sunday, Sabongs are held there, and hundreds of men gather around the area. There are the proud owners of the roosters, the betters, and the excited spectators.
For every fight, two cocks are paired with each other and are fitted with a single, sharp blade usually on the left foot. Once inside the arena, the two cocks are held by each owner and allowed to get close enough to peck each other. This will give an idea to the gamblers about which cock is the more aggressive. This is when chaos breaks loose and the spectators begin shouting in a mad frenzy to place their bets. With all the noise, they resort to hand signals to communicate how much they are betting, which can sometimes be a month's salary!
At this point the actual battle begins, and the chaos subsides. The audience stares at the center of the arena. Held at arms length by its owners, the two cocks are placed face to face and set loose. The fight is usually very short. Less than a minute! One of the cocks quickly gains the upper-hand. The rooster's owner, and those who bet on it rejoice. Huge stacks of bills are handed out from the losers to the winners. To many, this is more than a simple game, it represents a considerable source of income.
