Majuli, un sanctuaire en péril
C'est une île à deux visages. Un paradis à la belle saison, un enfer pendant la mousson.
Égarée entre le Bhoutan et la Birmanie, Majuli, fragile bande de sable posée au milieu du Brahmapoutre est victime du changement climatique.
La fonte des glaciers de la chaîne Himalayenne, la construction de barrages hydro-électriques en Chine et l?exploitation intensive du bois mettent en péril l'équilibre de ce sanctuaire d'une richesse exceptionnelle situé au Nord-Est de l'Inde.
À la saison sèche, la nature rayonne jusqu'à son paroxysme. Le vert éclatant des rizières tranche avec le jaune des champs de moutarde. Les immenses prairies en fleur sont le refuge privilégié de nombreuses espèces d'oiseaux migrateurs.
Mais lorsque les pluies diluviennes arrivent, le fleuve nourricier se gonfle, Majuli se retrouve alors submergée, grignotée de toute part. L'eau envahit les terres et détruit les récoltes. Ses rives s'arrachent par pans entiers. Les forts courants empêchent le ferry de traverser et l'île se retrouve privée d'électricité. Chaque année, plusieurs villages sont emportés au fil des crues.
En cinquante ans, cette île sacrée de l'Hindouisme connue pour ses moines danseurs a perdu le tiers de sa superficie. Selon certaines études, Majuli pourrait tout simplement avoir disparu d'ici vingt ans.
Vivant en grande partie de pêche et d?agriculture traditionnelle les 200 000 habitants de Majuli souffrent de cet isolement récurrent. Même si avec le temps ils ont appris à s'adapter aux caprices du fleuve, ils restent inquiets quant à leur avenir sur cette terre friable.
L'érosion poursuit son travail de sape sans relâche et aucune solution viable ne laisse entrevoir un avenir plus serein.
Face à l'ampleur de la catastrophe, les efforts déployés par les autorités apparaissent bien dérisoires. Des sacs de sable sont entassés sur les pourtours de l?île mais chacun sait que cela ne changera pas grand chose au destin funeste de Majuli.
Son patrimoine culturel, écologique et ethnique a fait l'objet de plusieurs candidatures de classement au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco, jusqu'ici restées sans succès...
Majuli, a sanctuary in peril
Located in northeast India, in Assam State, Majuli Island was once the largest river island in the world. Victim of climate change, this sacred island of Hinduism has lost a third of its surface area over the past 50 years. Eaten away by devastating monsoons and worrying erosion, experts predict its disappearance within 20 years.
It is an island with two faces. A paradise in the summer, a hell during the monsoon.
Stuck between Bhutan and Burma, Majuli, a fragile strip of sand in the middle of the Brahmaputra River, is a victim of climate change.
The melting of the Himalayan glaciers, the construction of hydroelectric dams in China and the intensive exploitation of wood are endangering the balance of this exceptionally rich sanctuary located in the North-East of India.
In the dry season, nature shines to its fullest. The bright green of the rice fields contrasts with the yellow of the mustard fields. The vast flowering meadows are a favourite refuge for many species of migratory birds.
But when the torrential rains arrive, the river swells and Majuli is submerged, nibbled away on all sides. The water invades the land and destroys the crops. Its banks are torn away in whole sections. The strong currents prevent the ferry from crossing and the island is left without electricity. Every year, several villages are swept away by the floods.
In fifty years, this sacred Hindu island known for its dancing monks has lost a third of its surface. According to some studies, Majuli could simply disappear within twenty years.
Living largely on fishing and traditional agriculture, Majuli's 200,000 inhabitants suffer from this recurrent isolation. Although they have learned to adapt to the vagaries of the river over time, they remain worried about their future on this friable land.
Erosion continues to undermine the land and there is no viable solution for a better future.
Given the scale of the disaster, the efforts of the authorities appear derisory. Sandbags are being piled up around the island, but everyone knows that this will do little to change Majuli's doom.
